I have quite the collection of art and event posters and pics of women I heart. I have been dreaming of a gallery wall. I’ve never done one because I fear the look of clutter, but thought I could handle it now :)
The problem… shelves are SO EXPENSIVE. I found these floating shelves at Ikea for $15 and bought four. Originally, I was going to get six, but honestly couldn’t spend that much, so I went with two rows.
I organized my art and took the pieces that didn’t have frames to Michaels when frames were BOGO. I did multiple transactions, so they didn’t charge me for the most expensive…yep, I’m that woman in line. And, sometimes you get home and realize things like, the “clear frame” has a weird mounting thing you can see when you cut your art…but done is better than perfect so I put it up anyway!
The same day I updated a lamp to go on the right side of the shelves because the living room gets a little dark.
I got this lamp from my mom. This thing is holding on by a thread, and it’s always been that uh, don’t touch it or it will fall apart. The shade isn’t attached and the sections fall apart, but I couldn’t get rid of it. I was going to go with white, but found a faded turquoise that will give a pop of color without competing with the crazy wall-o-art.
I found the shade and gave it new life. I switched the sides that the side tables were on so that the lamp would fit and it made the living room feel like a different place! Now I can see my friends and the places that have inspired me!
Cheap Door Decor
I live in a generic apartment complex. There’s not a lot to do to make your entrance inviting. Most folks default to a wreath and call it quits. I recently hung some flower cans & it really helped!
I found these pails at the dollar section of Target! I had purchased $1 cans at Ikea and was figuring out how to add a loop & decorate, etc. etc. etc….then I found these. PHEW!
I drilled some holes in the bottom to drain the water. Folks are always pinning things where they drill holes in things… but it really does only take a few minutes.
I bought some mums for $2.50. I originally bought two, thinking I could split them. Rookie mistake—mums share one stalk. And so I went BACK to Lowes. At Lowes, I also picked up three 3m Hooks that hold 4 lbs and are made for outside weather. This was the most expensive part…damn you 3M! But they’re great for windows, too!
I’m not nuts about the mat, but hey, it was like $6 at World Market. I just can’t fathom spending $30 on a place for mud. I had the silver 3M hook already, so I hung that for future decor. I found this basic Thanksgiving sign at the Dollar Tree for a … well, a $1. Hopefully the mums flower soon!
In the Spring, I’ll upgrade the mat and put a fun monogram up, and fill the pots with herbs, but for now this helps :)
I know it’s not Monday, but I was invited to do a self-love #mirrormonday yesterday. After I interrupted an insensitive (at best) commentary about my #LGBTQ community from my work-out instructor, I thought this morning is as good a time as ever. Thanks body for letting me exercise for an hour even though I give you bad food & not enough water. Thanks brain for processing the feelings of being made to think you’re less-than, but still able to organize thoughts to interrupt and educate. Thanks eyes for being a chameleon & are enjoying the blue greys today. Thanks shoulders/arms for being badass weight lifters. #nofilter #nomakeup …I’ll tag my next 5 next monday:)
Helping folks fill out their holiday wish lists at the VAC tonight:) You should adopt one of these awesome families! Email leslie at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to adopt a family or elderly person this season.
